The Karenni are a minority ethnic group from Myanmar (formerly Burma). Persecuted by the Buddhist majority government there, many were forced over the border to refugee camps in Thailand. From there, more than 200 Karenni have emigrated to the Milwaukee area. Trinity-Freistadt “adopted” the first Karenni family that came in 2009. The care they offered these immigrants has led to Word and Sacrament ministry that regularly includes nearly 100 for worship, ESL, Sunday School karenniimage2and Adult Instruction at Chapel of the Cross Lutheran Church on the south side of Milwaukee (Pastor David Zeuschner). Pastors Carl Lehenbauer and Joshua Rusert (Trinity-Freistadt), Phil Hillenbrand (Beautiful Savior-Mequon) and Tom Kaul (Faith-Germantown) help Pastor Zeuschner in this growing ministry. More than 30 students are attending Trinity-Freistadt’s elementary school, and a growing number of high school students attend Milwaukee Lutheran. God has blessed this growing immigrant community!
