Thanksgiving Baskets

On Thanksgiving Day we will offer our prayers of praise, thanksgiving and supplication before we participate in an annual feast surrounded by family and friends.  We will enjoy a great deal of bounty; reflecting on the generosity of our heavenly Father Who has provided and continues to provide abundantly.

Since 2011, Brookfield Lutheran Church and the South Wisconsin District have partnered together to provide a Thanksgiving meal for families in Milwaukee, Racine and Beloit. Individuals and congregations have shared some of their bounty with others, giving with a thankful heart from the gifts they have received.

Our goal this year is to touch the lives of 954 families with baskets containing a turkey, green beans, corn, rice, yams, stuffing, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie and topping, dinner rolls and apple juice. The members of Brookfield Lutheran Church will assemble and deliver the baskets as they have since 1993. But they need partners to help in this annual day of sharing.

Please consider being a partner as each basket costs approximately $30, and your generous financial gift will go a long way in sharing some of God’s abundance with others.  A financial donation of any size is appreciated and so are your prayers for the blessings of God upon this effort to share mercy and grace with others.

As always, if you have any questions please speak with your pastor or call the South Wisconsin District office
at (414) 464-8100 or burakowski@swd.lcms.org.

Disaster Relief Teams

All volunteer registrations must be received 48 hours in advance of arrival so proper work arrangements can be made.

Over a two-week period beginning in late August, a sizeable region in West Central Wisconsin received a substantial amount of rain causing flooding in six counties.  After surveying multiple sites and carefully planning with partners in those regions, we have identified several cities that need help.  The Office of Mission and Human Care is coordinating with St. Paul Lutheran Church in Reedsburg, WI to establish a volunteer relief center to work there and in surrounding communities.

Location:
St. Peter Lutheran Church
345 N Pine Street
Reedsburg, WI 53959

The Relief Center includes the following:
– Overnight accommodations in a common space (not gender specific)
– A commercial kitchen for food preparation, cooking, storage and cleaning (each group prepares)
– Showers (gymnasium)
– Tools
– Supplies such as drywall, tape, mud, etc.

Work will include mucking (cleaning) out houses, moving furniture and appliances, removing carpet and other flooring, hanging dry wall, taping, mudding, and assisting community members with other tasks.

All volunteers will be coordinated by a Volunteer Coordinator who will assign worksites, provide general center oversite, distribute tools and supplies, and work with team leaders or individuals to coordinate meal and shower schedules.

Because of the nature of work and safety considerations, all volunteers must be at least 16 years old – exceptions cannot be made.

General Daily Schedule

6:30 AM Breakfast preparation for you or your team
7:00 – 8:00 AM Breakfast and lunch preparation/packing by team
8:30 AM Meeting with Volunteer Coordinator
9:00 AM Depart for worksite

4:30 PM Clean-up worksite

Again, shower facilities are in a gymnasium and overnight accommodations are in the Concordia Fellowship Hall with limited privacy.  While care and effort has been taken to provide as much privacy as possible, it is recommended that you plan accordingly. It is a common space and not gender specific, individuals staying there should plan on bringing:
– Air mattress or cot
– Bedding or sleeping bag
– flashlight
– flip-flops or sandals
– appropriate sleeping attire

Signing up to volunteer with the South Wisconsin District please follow the easy steps:
