Disaster Relief Teams

All volunteer registrations must be received 48 hours in advance of arrival so proper work arrangements can be made.

Over a two-week period beginning in late August, a sizeable region in West Central Wisconsin received a substantial amount of rain causing flooding in six counties.  After surveying multiple sites and carefully planning with partners in those regions, we have identified several cities that need help.  The Office of Mission and Human Care is coordinating with St. Paul Lutheran Church in Reedsburg, WI to establish a volunteer relief center to work there and in surrounding communities.

Location:
St. Peter Lutheran Church
345 N Pine Street
Reedsburg, WI 53959

The Relief Center includes the following:
– Overnight accommodations in a common space (not gender specific)
– A commercial kitchen for food preparation, cooking, storage and cleaning (each group prepares)
– Showers (gymnasium)
– Tools
– Supplies such as drywall, tape, mud, etc.

Work will include mucking (cleaning) out houses, moving furniture and appliances, removing carpet and other flooring, hanging dry wall, taping, mudding, and assisting community members with other tasks.

All volunteers will be coordinated by a Volunteer Coordinator who will assign worksites, provide general center oversite, distribute tools and supplies, and work with team leaders or individuals to coordinate meal and shower schedules.

Because of the nature of work and safety considerations, all volunteers must be at least 16 years old – exceptions cannot be made.

General Daily Schedule

7:00 – 8:00 AM Breakfast and lunch preparation/packing by team

Again, shower facilities are in a gymnasium and overnight accommodations are in the Concordia Fellowship Hall with limited privacy.  While care and effort has been taken to provide as much privacy as possible, it is recommended that you plan accordingly. It is a common space and not gender specific, individuals staying there should plan on bringing:
– Air mattress or cot
– Bedding or sleeping bag
– flashlight
– flip-flops or sandals
– appropriate sleeping attire
