Making plans for 2011? Consider being a host site for a stewardship “fireside” chat. Tim Dittloff or a member of the SWD stewardship task force will present on the many facets of stewardship at your congregation. All you have to do is promote the event within your area/circuit and provide a few snacks and beverages. This is a great opportunity to attain valuable knowledge of stewardship programs and resources that are available to you. This time also offers meaningful discussion about stewardship with your neighboring brothers and sisters in Christ.
Since a recent mailing asking congregations to consider being a host site for a stewardship "fireside chat," many responses were received and five host sites are scheduled for the fall of 2010. If you would like to attend a fireside chat at one of the following locations, please RSVP to that host site's contact by the designated date. The time is 6-8 p.m. Location and contact list

If you are facing budget deficits or forced to live with a minimum budget, if you lack the funds needed for your ministries, if you want to learn about the goldmine of more than five years of “stewardship of giving” resources and programs, and if you do not have the new power-packed book, Turning Donors Into Disciples, then you will want to bring a group of leaders from your church to know how to be able to “do it by yourself” to plan successful giving programs through the next five years.

Streams and rivers running through a steward's life
Following through on the concept that mission without stewardship is impossible and that stewardship with mission is pointless, the SWD is offering stewardship classes combined with a fly fishing class at the Richfield Cabela’s store. The classes start Jan. 21, 2010, and run every other Thursday from 6:30-8 p.m. Local parish pastors will lead participants through a biblical stewardship lesson which follows a session on fly fishing. The classes will be open to the public shopping at the Cabela’s store. The course is free to all attendees. Flyer
Representatives from eight congregations attended the “Elemental Life” workshop Nov. 7, 2009. They listened and learned from pastor and author Joe Burnham from Denver, Colo. Burnham shared the basic premises of his book which are based on elements of Luther’s Small Catechism. The author illustrated how easy it is to share the Good News by using this book. Each attendee received a copy, and an e-mail to follow up on implementing the study in their own congregation.
Nov. 7, 2009 • 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
District office, Milwaukee
Presenter and author Rev. Joe Burnham (St. John, Denver) will discuss the concepts in his book, The Elemental Life. Life—the decisions and challenges we face concerning work, recreation, money, relationships and the future—can be complex and overwhelming. But it doesn't have to be! It’s not easy, but it is elemental.
Learn how to use the book in small groups, as a witness tool or in a stewardship group. Cost is $25, including meals and materials. Contact Barb Slak at (800) 793-3678 or slak@swd.lcms.org to register.
Work on "faith raising" instead of fund raising by attending the "Annual Funding" stewardship learning community Nov. 11 at St. John, Plymouth. Running from 6:30-8:30 p.m., the event will address annual stewardship campaigns, annual mission gifts, connecting God's stewards to God's Word and resources to fill your needs. Cost is $15 per person. R.S.V.P. by Nov. 9 to Barb Slak, (414) 464-8100 or (800) 793-3678. St. John is located at 222 N. Stafford St., Plymouth 53073-1839. Postcard

Barnabas (Son of Encouragement) was an exemplary model of discipleship, mentoring, and encouragement. To assist congregations in the South Wisconsin District with missional discipleship, SWD staff members are available to help your congregation set up Barnabas clubs. The clubs are a way of growing disciples and encouraging others to grow in faith, as stewards, and to reach out to tell the Gospel.
Barnabas clubs are a unique way of engaging members in living new lives as disciples and stewards in the Kingdom.
Get up, get up, it’s out of here...home run!
That is exactly how the SWD stewardship “All Star” event played out…a homerun! The event was held at the South Wisconsin District office Tuesday, July 14, the same night of the Major League All Star game. There were 50 men and women in attendance, including pastors, laypersons, school administrators and financial counselors.
You are invited to an "All-Star" stewardship event on Tuesday, July 14 beginning at 4 p.m. at the South Wisconsin District office in Milwaukee. The evening’s line-up will be a home-run, beginning with a short presentation by Ron Smith, Gift Planning Services. Ron Smith of Gift Planning Services will present "Expanding stewardship horizons for today and tomorrow." Develop an in-depth understanding of how you can remember all the blessings the Lord has given to your family and ministry through a Christian estate plan.
With the departure of John Meyer from the LCMS Foundation, there has been a void in servicing congregations and their members in the area of Christian estate planning and charitable giving options. After reviewing a number of strategies to fill this void, the South Wisconsin District has entered into an agreement with Gift Planning Services of Eau Claire. This organization and its leaders have a long history of serving congregations and districts within the LCMS.

Stewardship and planning? What's the connection? A workshop from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Jan. 10, 2009, at the District office will focus on two key connections, God and his plans for you, me and his church, and your calling as a leader in his church.
It all begins with God, and his plans for us and for his church. Planning is always in the context of being God’s stewards, using the time, talent and treasures that he has blessed us with to his glory. Much of “leadership” has to do with “management,” and isn’t “management” another word for “stewardship”?
What is stewardship? How is stewardship perceived in your congregation? How can we teach stewardship in our congregations? How can I become a better steward with my time, talents and treasures? Where do I find stewardship resources? To get answers to these questions and more, attend the monthly stewardship learning community workshops at the South Wisconsin District office. Soon you will have "Growing stewards for missions."
The SWD stewardship task force announces "A lofty Christian work: Luther on stewardship," presented by Rev. Dr. Timothy M. Maschke (Concordia University Wisconsin, Mequon). The program begins at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity-Freistadt, Mequon, followed by lunch and fellowship at noon. There is no cost to attend. Please RSVP to Barb Slak by Sept. 23, (800) 793-3678 or (414) 464-8100. Flyer
