Camp LuWiSoMo suspends operations for winter
Struggling financially, Camp LuWiSoMo is shutting down during the winter months. In a recent letter one of the Camp board members wrote, “Rather than have President Wille act alone, the camp board decided that it was necessary to suspend operations at the camp for a period of six months.”
The suspension of day to day operations will begin Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009 and continue through April 30, 2010.
With attendance at camp’s 2009 summer programs down approximately 50 percent, Camp LuWiSoMo does not have sufficient funds to meet its financial obligations for the winter months. Because of that camp staff is being laid off, with the exception of a maintenance person. Buildings are being prepared for “mothballing.” Arrangements are being made so that phone calls about the camp grounds and various camp programs can be forwarded to the SWD office.
This is certainly not an easy decision for anyone involved. Camp ministry has been an important aspect of what happens in South Wisconsin for many years. However, the financial reality left no other options.
The camp board is working diligently with the aim of reopening the camp May 1, 2009. However finances remain a major obstacle to that reopening. Exactly what the camp program will be in the summer of 2010 is not yet known.
Please keep all connected with Camp LuWiSoMo in your prayers!
