Opportunities to serve as VIPs
Tuesday, November 11, 2008 :: 4877 Views :: 0 Comments :: Article Rating :: South Wisconsin News ::

After Jesus washed his disciples’ feet (John 13:5), he said (verse 15), “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”

Jesus was a servant, and so are you! You already serve God in your homes, churches and communities. The South Wisconsin District will soon be giving you and your congregation additional opportunities to serve Jesus as VIPs. (“VIPs” are “Volunteers in Personal Service.”)

This new volunteer initiative is being developed to encourage personal involvement in God’s mission to reach the lost with his saving grace. Various types of servant jobs will be open, depending on the volunteer’s available time, talents, qualifications and interests. Some opportunities may be onetime events and some may be regularly scheduled. Service will enhance your personal spiritual growth and will provide fellowship opportunities.

A general volunteer application form is posted on the District website. Volunteers who fill out this form will be notified when areas of service open in their area of interest. New opportunities will be available each month.

You have the awesome privilege to prepare yourself for service:
  1. Pray about your own, and your congregation’s, involvement. Opportunities may be available for groups to participate in servant events; some tasks may be available to work on from your home.
  2. If you’re unsure about what God-given gifts and talents God has given to you, you may like to take a spiritual gifts inventory.
  3. Say to God, “Here am I. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:8).
For updated information, go to swd.lcms.org and see “Volunteer Opportunities” under the “Get Involved” menu, or contact Carolyn Blum, SWD volunteer coordinator, at (262) 966-7418 or volunteer@swd.lcms.org.

Service opportunities to match all interests

What kind of opportunities may be available at the District office or right from your home? Jobs may include assisting with bulk mailings, praying, phoning, writing, data entry, folding, collating, stuffing folders, designing flyers, editing, yard work, repairs, painting, word processing, cleaning, congregational news reporting, food service and special projects.

Other ways to serve will become available as the volunteer program is developed. Each of your talents is needed!
