South Wisconsin District of The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod
Membership and Requirements to Hold Office
The membership of the Board of Regents consists of seventeen (17) voting members. One (1) ordained minister, one (1) commissioned minister, and two (2) laypersons shall be elected by the convention of the South Wisconsin District. They may serve a maximum of three (3) consecutive three-year terms and must hold membership in a member congregation of the Synod,.
The President of the South Wisconsin District (or a Vice-President as his representative) shall serve as an ex-officio member.
Not more than two of the elected members shall be members of the same congregation. They shall not be on the salaried staff of a synodical education institution or enter into any gainful business, contracts, or transactions with the institution.
Meetings
The Board of Regents usually meets four times a year (September, November, February, and May). Special meetings may be called if needed.
The Executive Committee of the Board of Regents, consisting of the Chairman, Vice-Chairman, and Secretary, may meet more frequently.
Responsibilities
The Board of Regents shall
- define and fulfill the mission of the institution within the broad assignment of the Synod;
- serve as the local governing body of the institution on behalf of the Synod;
- become familiar with synodical and Board for Higher Education policies, standards, and guidelines;
- develop details of policies and procedures for the governance of the institution;
- review and approve academic programs recommended by the administration and the faculty;
- approve institutional fiscal arrangements, develop the financial resources necessary to operate the institution, and participate in its support
- program;
- establish appropriate policy for student aid;
- participate in the procedures for the selection and regular review of the president of the institution and of the major administrators;
- approve appointment of faculty members;
- approve sabbatical and study leaves;
- manage, preserve, and improve the assets of the institution as custodian of the Synod’s property;
- perform such other duties as are incidental to the board and as are assigned to it by resolution of the District or Synod and prescribed by the Bylaws
