Harley riders welcomed
Tens of thousands of Harley-Davidson motorcycle riders roared into Milwaukee the last week in August for the company’s 105th anniversary and reunion. Their first event was an open-air rock-music festival Wednesday in front of the company’s headquarters – just around the corner from Hope Lutheran Church at 35th and Highland. The city blocked off Highland Boulevard in front of the church to provide motorcycle parking for the thousands of attendees who arrived for the concert and food.
Given the noise and distraction of motorcycles and rock music, it didn’t seem wise to try to hold Hopes' usual Wednesday night worship service. Instead Rev. Micah Wildauer cancelled the service and sent the regular church attendees out into the crowds to welcome and evangelize the visitors. A dozen church members distributed more than 1,000 flyers that welcomed the Harley riders “to our corner of the city” and invited them to come back Sunday for Hope's worship service. In addition, many passersby stopped to chat with Wildauer as he and his wife sat outside on the church steps.
Some of the Hope members had never done street evangelism before. They reported that they were nervous but really enjoyed the experience. The “bikers” were polite and many accepted the evangelism flyers. As it turned out, none of the riders showed up at Hope for the 9 a.m. service the following Sunday, although Wildauer was ready to do a bike blessing if requested. But many Gospel seeds were planted and Hope continued its mission as a very noticeable part of the neighborhood.
