Early childhood

SWD early childhood consultant, Linda Kennell, visits free standing preschools and childcare centers, serves as a resource for congregations who want information about ministering to young children, and encourages those already in ministry to young children and their families. Please contact her if there’s anything she can do to help you in your ministry as you point parents and young children to their Lord and Savior, Jesus.

See recent posts below or visit Kennell's "Pointing to Jesus" blog.

Pointing to Jesus
St. John’s Circle of Friends, West Bend
May 11, 2012
Cheryl Rudolf, director of the childcare program at St. John’s in West Bend, previously worked in the school office at St. John’s while her own 5 children attended school there. She was influential in getting the congregation to consider caring for their elementary students after school, when the childcare started 9 years ago. In August of 2003, they opened their program f...

Rebecca Klima is assistant dean of students and director of the early childhood department for Sherman Park Lutheran School and Preschool. While the church and school have been there for many years, attendance at Sunday worship has dwindled. LUMIN (Lutheran Urban Mission Initiative) took charge of the school and now the classrooms are full from 3 year preschool through 8th grade.

Mt. Olive Christian Preschool, Madison

Mt. Olive Lutheran Church and Preschool took a bold leap of faith when they moved to a newer facility 3 years ago. The congregation that had been using this new facility outgrew it. At just the right time, the people of Mt. Olive bought the land and buildings, remodeled the sanctuary, brought with them important pieces of their old building, like stained glass windows and the baptismal font, and settled in.

Now the stained glass windows from the old church are back lit and beautify the entry.

They have one large, bright preschool classroom and a large storage room/office for Janelle Tonsage...

Christ Memorial, Madison
Apr 20, 2012
Christ Memorial was not the only preschool to struggle with the issue of welcoming public 4K into their building or risk a significant drop in enrollment. But Janet Vollmer, the director, smiled as she shared with me how God blessed their preschool through this trying time. Janet and her staff were not willing to do what the Madison School Board required: cover or take down all visuals relating...

How do you start over? How do you step into a new position and respect what’s been done, yet make necessary changes? I’ve watched a few fine women step into just such a position in Lutheran early childhood centers in Wisconsin and seen how God has blessed them all along the way.

Portage, as many of you know is “where the north begins.”

Thinking of you
Mar 16, 2012
I had the wonderful opportunity a few weeks ago to attend the Early Childhood Consultants Conference in Orlando, FL. Most of the consultants from the various districts in our Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod were present. It’s the second time I’ve been able to attend, so I’ve begun to develop friendships with these faithful women of God. We had time to share our own joys and challenges as we work to suppo...

St. Peter’s Lutheran Church is home to a childcare center accredited since 2000 with NAEYC, the National Association for the Education of Young Children. There aren’t very many centers of our Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod who are nationally accredited. It was my joy to visit this one.
