Summary of the board of directors meeting
The South Wisconsin District of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod
Thursday, May 15, 2008
In action, the board:
- approved the minutes of the March 6, 2008, meeting of the South Wisconsin District board of directors
- approved the amended constitutions/bylaws of FirstImmanuel, Cedarburg; Grace, Haven; and St. John, Beloit
- approved for 2008 an additional $35,000 salary for prison ministry over the initial budgeted amount of $17,000, with no recommendation for 2009
- established a governance committee as a committee of the board
- extended a call from the SWD board to Terry Schmeckpeper to serve as director at Camp LuWiSoMo
- granted the request for pursuit of 501(c)3 status for MTM (Ministry Technology Mentor)
The board discussed:
- the annual audit of District conducted by Vrakas/Blum
- qualifications and expectations of the individual to lead the camp at this time, as well as the responsibilities/obligations of the board regarding the calling of Camp LuWiSoMo personnel
The board received reports from:
- President Wille highlighting:
- selection of Rev. Dan Torkelson, Gene Ladendorf and Dr. John Jaeger for the theological conference regarding restructuring. The SWD board will receive a 90-minute presentation at the December meeting. Consideration was given to having November and December BOD meetings. A request will be made that Synod meet with the board in November
- president’s breakfast well received; 90-95 attended last gathering in May
- appointment of Rev. Bernie Huesmann as 2009 SWD convention committee chair
- assured board that SWD pastoral conference resolution regarding Issues, Etc. was passed on to the council of presidents and referenced individuals
- Rev. Dan McMiller highlighting:
- Rev. Richard Boeck has stepped away from assisting Bethany, Milwaukee; Bethany will continue with Rev. Chris Ikanih, who is requesting additional assistance
- involvement of EIIT (Ethnic Immigrant Institute of Theology) students in the consecrated stewards program
- appointment of Elijah Ndon to serve as vicar at Hope, Milwaukee, for the coming year
- Hispanic music ministry has not been able to find a director
- Moua Vang has been commissioned and is serving at Benediction, Milwaukee
- Rev. Yia Vang has two students who will be taking lay ministry training at the District office
- initiatives being carried on by the Metro Milwaukee Lutheran Mission Society
- upcoming business plan to be presented to the board by Mission Hill, Waunakee, for operation of preschool ministry
- concerns with the deaf ministry carried out by Rev. John Reinke, and actions taken and /or restrictions placed on him by LCMS, SWD, and Concordia Seminary, St. Louis
- question was raised regarding the ministry of Whitewater campus ministry program. At present everything is status quo, but cannot continue indefinitely as is. Pastor is on call list and has been informed of status.
- Debra Novak's summary of congregational remittances, congregational financial report, SWD balance sheet, statement of activities, and departmental expense analysis
- Tim Dittloff presented presented the printed report of LCEF and the report of stewardship activities
