On Feb. 23, 2008, the Hispanic Business and Professionals Association (HBPA) presented Rev. Pedro Lopez a community enhancement award at their 2008 banquet. The award was given in recognition of his contribution to the community of Racine. Lopez is pastor of Primera Iglesia Luterana congregation in Racine, and also a board member of the HBPA.

"Through the years Primera Iglesia has been a meeting point for many organizations," said Lopez. "I get involved in as many projects as possible in the community for the sole reason of sharing the good news of Jesus with community leaders and their contacts, and to be able to help others as I meet key leaders in our area. With more than 200 participants attending this event, it was clear that the message of our church is, 'We care for our communities!'"
Primera Iglesia hosts a Hispanic roundtable and also a Hispanic heritage month luncheon almost every year, which is attended by more than 150 community leaders. They also make all the arrangements for the Mexican Fiesta for the Racine and Kenosha areas which takes place in their facility. These events help to raise money to assist minorities with their education.
The church also offers English as a second language, drivers’ education and citizenship classes to the community. Their Bible studies and worship services are well attended, with many visitors coming from the Hispanic community. The Hispanic music ministry is growing, and will hopefully become another mission outreach to the Hispanic community.
Lopez thanks everyone in the SWD for their prayers and support for Hispanic ministry in southeast Wisconsin.
