Inner city congregation Bethany, Milwaukee, witnesses 45 Easter baptisms
Friday, April 18, 2008 :: 885 Views :: Missions ::
When the power and truth of God’s Word—the Law and the Gospel—are applied to the lives of the lost and dying in a world full of sin and at odds with God, people are changed, their hearts are opened, and they yearn to become children of God.
 Evidence that such a thing is happening in Milwaukee’s inner city was seen on Easter Sunday. As Easter is a time of new life and resurrection, it was an appropriate blessing for Rev. Chris Ikanih and Rev. Richard Boeck, along with the growing family of believers at Bethany, to welcome into the family of God 45 new souls (from babes in arms to adults) through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. An additional nine persons were baptized the following Sunday, for a total of 54 new baptisms in a congregation that had been reduced to 15-20 worshippers and at the verge of closing just before Christmas. Ikanih instructed the baptismal candidates for three Saturdays prior to Easter and the joy was shared by more than 200 people who worshiped at Bethany on Easter Sunday. A joyous meal was held after the worship service that day and the joy of the resurrection and the power of God’s love and redemption in Christ were evident to all.
Together Ikanih and Boeck have used the specific talents and gifts God has given each of them to further the growth of God’s Kingdom in and around the Bethany community. Average attendance on Sunday mornings is now around 80 people, and Sunday school, youth instruction, a youth choir and adult instruction have begun.
The prayers of God’s people, especially the members of the LCMS congregations of the SWD, are requested, along with any willingness you may have to assist with this important work. Volunteers for vacation Bible school in August this year, as well as various other needs, financial and physical, are needed and requested. Please call Pastor Ikanih or Pastor Boeck if you would like more information about how you or your congregation can help.
